It was brought to the attention of the UNODC that a new drug trade is on the rise, centered in East Africa, and had begun to affect the countries participating in it as well as their neighbors. Tension is immediately shown between the delegations of the USA and Russia, each having a different approach to the issue at hand. The delegation of the People’s Republic of China openly opposes this drug trade, having been involved in the trade of opioids for decades and seeing the devastating consequences. Delegates discuss how the drug trade was brought about by the poverty in these countries, and how completely banishing it could prove to be devastating to East African families who only found financial stability because of it.
As Russia and the USA keep arguing over the trade and whether to support it, China reminds them that they are outsiders, and issues in East Africa should be resolved locally as opposed to interventions by foreign powers. However, the case of India is brought up. The country has laws protecting drug trade; is this what some delegations wish to bring to East Africa? Many countries do not seem to agree or respect these laws.
After a long and arduous debate in which India and France had to defend their opinions against the other delegations, solutions were bought to the table. Delegations of the USA and Russia wish to directly intervene with the trade in a joint plan; consequently, they are accused by China as attempting colonization. The UK and China’s delegations come up with a plan of their own, and many of their points, though less invasive, go hand in hand with the former proposal. This session ends on a positive note, as both parties are willing to modify their proposals and come up with a joint solution.
